The British Isles have been continually settled since 12500 years
ago when hunter-gatherer bands returned in the wake of the
retreating ice sheets. For 7000 years, until the introduction of
farming, people subsisted by hunting wild game and gathering the
fruits of the forest and foreshore. In archaeolgical terms they
belonged to the late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods, and have
hitherto, been studied mainly in terms of their stone tools. Today,
in an age when there is growing concern over the relationship
between human beings and a rapidly changing environment, an earlier
period when this relationship was both intimate and immediate is of
considerable interest. "Late Stone Age Hunters of the British
Isles" places the archaeological evidence - mainly stone tools and
animal bones - within a wider, ecological context. The book
examines aspects of the hunter-gatherer way of life and how it can
be studied from archaeological evidence. There follows a review of
environmental change in the period covered and three chapters of
case studies in which different examples of hunter-gatherer
activity are examined within their ecological context. This book
should be of interest to students a
We have been created to live and work in community. But all too
often we see ourselves primarily as individuals and run the risk of
working at cross-purposes with the organizations we serve. Living
faithfully in a neighborhood involves two interwoven threads:
learning and action. In this book C. Christopher Smith, coauthor of
Slow Church, looks at the local church as an organization in which
both learning and action lie at the heart of its identity. He
explores the practice of reading and, in his words, "how we can
read together in ways that drive us deeper into action." Smith
continues, "Church can no longer simply be an experience to be
passively consumed; rather, we are called into the participatory
life of a community. Reading is a vital practice for helping our
churches navigate this shift." Discover how books can help your
churches and neighborhoods bring flourishing to the world.
Trade, exchange and commerce touched the lives of everyone in
antiquity, especially those who lived in urban areas. Trade,
Traders and the Ancient City addresses the nature of exchange and
commerce and the effects it had in cities throughout the ancient
world, from the Bronze Age Near East to late Roman northern Italy.
Trade, Traders and the Ancient City employs the most recent
archaeological, papyrological, epigraphic and literary evidence to
present an innovative and timely analysis of the importance and
influence of trade in the ancient world.
Traditionally, architecture has been preoccupied with the
resolution of form. That concern helps to make photogenic
buildings, which have received a great deal of attention. This book
looks instead at the idea of the flows, which connects things
together and moves between things. It is more difficult to discuss,
but more necessary, because it is what makes things work.
Architects have to think about flow ? the flow of people through
buildings, the flow of energy into buildings, and waste out of them
? but usually the effects of flow do not find expression. The
essays gathered here present a collection of exploratory ideas and
offer an understanding of buildings, people and settlements through
concepts of flow.

This book is concerned with the management of organisational
change. It focuses on Cadbury Ltd and provides an in-depth study of
change within this famous British company. Cadbury Ltd is famous
for its pioneering personnel management. One of the purposes of
this study is to assess how this established company ethos
facilitated change by examining the development and implementation
of a capital investment programme that radically changed working
practices at the company's Bournville plant in Birmingham. At a
more general level the authors develop a theory of organisational
change that emphasises the interaction between external market
forces and internal management action. This approach unites an
emphasis on the structural parameters that limit a firm's capacity
for independent change, with a recognition of the vital role
performed by influential members of an organisation in initiating
and managing change. This book will be of interest to teachers and
students of business history, organisational behaviour, industrial
relations and industrial sociology.

The Cambridge Ancient History is the most authoritative history of
the ancient world. This volume is the partner to the volume of
plates illustrating the Hellenistic East and provides an
authoritative selection of illustrations for the early history of
Rome and the development of the city of Rome, as well as all the
regions of Italy and the West, including North Africa, Spain,
Sicily and Gaul. It covers a period in which Rome began to expand
westwards and illustrates both Rome's own transformation and the
impact on the West, including the consequences of the Punic Wars
and the destruction to Carthage. All aspects of material culture
are considered, with a particular focus on the development of
coinage, as well as monumental building, the archaeology of naval
and land warfare and the fascinating mixtures of languages and
scripts represented in epigraphy. This will become a standard
reference work for the period.
